WETHERBY 1.02

SKIPTHESCALES (system – Nick Alexander, second run after a wind operation)

Trainer Nick Alexander has an eyecatching record with his runners having their second start after wind surgery, scoring with five of the 22 qualifiers for a profit of £9.38 to a £1 level stake at SP. Three more finished second (33-1, 16-1 and 9-1), two finished third (50-1 and 14-1) and three more finished fourth (33-1, 12-1 and 11-2), suggesting an each-way play on SKIPTHESCALES could pay dividends. He ran respectably on his first start following the wins surgery (it was also his stable debut), finishing third at Kelso last month.

LASKALIN (system – Venetia Williams handicap chasers in December, recent run)

Regular readers will recall the ‘Venetia Williams-trained handicap chases in November’ system and she also does well in December, especially with those who’d had a relatively recent outing (within 90 days). She’s trained 104 winners from 481 runners during the current century (21.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £72.08 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 81). LASKALIN looked in need of the experience when sixth on his British/stable debut at Wetherby in late October and should improve for that outing. Any rain will aid his cause.

VE DAY (system – Andrew Balding second-time out 2yos, beaten less than ten lengths on debut)

Andrew Balding juveniles have a solid record at the second-time of asking and those who were beaten but finished within ten lengths of the winner on their debuts have an 81 from 329 record (24.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £58.12 to a £1 level stake at SP. VE DAY would have needed the experience when beaten by less than seven lengths into a 40-1 eighth of 12 here last month and can take a big step forward, despite his tricky wide draw.

KING OF THE SOUTH (system – Tapeta expert)

KING OF THE SOUTH was well beaten at Doncaster on his penultimate start but bounced back to win in good style at Newcastle last time. That run took his record on Tapeta to 1122131 (4-7), with the runner-up efforts by just a head and half a length. He could prove hard to beat tonight.
