- NFL – Tennessee Titans vs San Francisco 49ers
- Thursday, December 22 at Nissan Stadium, Tennessee
- The game begins at 20:20 EST
- Broadcast live on FOX
The Tennessee Titans (9-5; AFC South) saw their hopes of a conference win all but eviscerate when Tannehill and the boys lost out in a close one vs the Pittsburgh Steelers last weekend. The Titans are still the team to beat in AFC South, but Mike Vrabel’s team can ill-afford another slip-up vs San Francisco if they hope to keep the chasing Colts (8-6) off of the top spot.
The San Francisco 49ers’ (8-6; NFC West) second half of the season resurgence has seen them thrust themselves into playoff contention. Despite Kyle Shanahan’s team being in third place in the NFC West, such is the quality in the division, that it’s likely three teams qualify. But the 49ers will need another big result on the road vs Titans to stay in the mix.

Titans vs 49ers Preview
The last time we saw the San Francisco 49ers in action, the team beat the Falcons by 31-13. QB Jimmy Garoppolo continued his fine mid-late season form, racking up 18/23 for 235-yards, one TD, and no interceptions. On the year, the former Patriot now has 3,172-yards, 18 TDs, just the eight picks, and is looking much more like the Garoppolo we all saw guide the 49ers to the Super Bowl two years ago, especially since the return to fitness of his favorite receiver, TE George Kittle. WR Deebo Samuel is also playing the best football of his career and has already amassed 1,357-yards from scrimmage and 12 TDs.
On defense, Nick Bosa was impressive as always vs the Falcons. After missing the majority of last season with an ACL tear, the DE has been unplayable since his return, racking up 15 sacks, including one or more in each of his last six games. So, expect to see Bosa in the face of Titans QB Ryan Tannehill on the regular.
Against the Titans, the 49ers will test their 7th-ranked rushing attack, averaging 126.6-yards per game, up against Tennessee’s 2nd-ranked run defense that concedes a measly 86.9-YAPG. It’s our opinion that whichever team comes out on top in this battle is likely to win.
As for the Titans, last Sunday Tannehill and co. were defeated 13-19 by the Steelers at Heinz Field. Tannehill threw 23/32 for 232-yards, 0 TDs, and one interception. With Derrick Henry missing alongside him in the backfield and without his star wide receivers Julio Jones and A.J. Brown for large portions of the season, the former Dolphin hasn’t had it easy and has done well to keep the Titans competitive in the passing game. But, with both Brown and Julio Jones expected back in time for TNF, more will be expected of the Titans QB, not to mention the 49ers coverage unit!
Tennessee also boasts one of the best ground games in football this year, ranking ahead of the 49ers in 4th place with 142.3-YPG on average. The stat is slightly inflated by Derrick Henry’s incredible run at the start of the season before he went down injured, but the committee approach featuring the likes of Dontrell Hilliard, D’Onta Foreman, and Jeremy McNichols has worked well in his absence.
San Francisco also boasts a top-tier run defense, so again, the ground game is likely to be a key part of the battle between these two playoff-chasing teams.
Titans vs 49ers Team News
San Francisco is in good shape ahead of the trip to Tennessee. RB Elijah Mitchell is a slight concern. -the Louisiana product is still under concussion protocol and will likely be a gameday decision. RB2 Jeff Wilson Jr. deputized well in Mitchell’s absence vs Falcons last Sunday, racking up 110-yards and a TD, so expect to see him given more snaps if the latter misses out.
On the defensive side of things, the 49ers could be without starting LBs Azeez Al-Shaair and Dre Greenlaw, as well as starting SS Jaquiski Tartt who are all listed as questionable.
For the Titans offense, WR Julio Jones will again be a game-time decision after pulling his hamstring vs Steelers on Sunday. LT Taylor Lewan is also a doubt. LB David Long Jr. is likely to be the only absent starter on defense for Mike Vrabel’s team.
NFL Picks: Titans vs 49ers
With rookie RB sensation Elijah Mitchell missing for the 49ers, we’re expecting to see the Titans come out on top in the run game and edge out a narrow win – something that will no doubt be aided by the fact that Tannehill finally has his star set of receivers back in action on the flanks in Brown and Jones.
But, these are two very evenly matched teams, so we’re not expecting much in it either way.
As such, our preferred bet is to take the Titans on the spread at +3.5 (-115). If Tennessee wins, you win. And if the 49ers win a close one by a couple of points, you still win.
Prediction: Titans win a thriller
