Rams vs Seahawks Preview
With their season hanging in the balance, Seattle Seahawks have done well in recent weeks, putting together a run of two successive victories vs the 49ers and, more recently, the Texans in a 33-13 W last Sunday.
In that win against Houston, the two sides of Seattle’s Jekyll and Hyde season were on full display. With Russell Wilson (17/28 for 260-yards and 2 TDs) back in good form, the Seattle pass attack is still a dangerous weapon, especially when Wilson opts to throw deep – WR Tyler Lockett ended up with 142-yards and a touchdown (28.4-yards per reception!). However, it doesn’t bode so well for the Seahawks up against the Rams that Ken Norton Jr.’s secondary allowed Texans’ rookie QB, Davis Mills, to go 33/49 for 331-yards, one TD, and zero interceptions.
The lack of playmakers in the Seattle secondary had previously forced S Jamal Adams to operate far deeper than he usually does. But the former Jet ended up suffering a season-ending injury a month ago, and the issues in the Seahawks coverage continue. Seattle ranks 32nd (last) in the NFL for passing yards against, ceding an average of 278.9-YAPG.
Being unable to stop the pass is not a label you want heading into a season-defining divisional clash against the LA Rams either.
With Matthew Stafford at quarterback, Sean McVay’s team is the 4th ranked team in the NFL for passing yards per game, averaging 287.3-YPG. WR Cooper Kupp leads the league in yards (1,489-yards), receiving TDs (12), and targets (113), and WR Odell Beckham Jr. also appears to be finding his feet in LA blue – the former Brown has 186-yards and three TDs in his last three games.
As good as the Rams offense is, the last time we saw LA in action, it was the defense that stole the show. Against the Cardinals, two Sundays ago, Raheem Morris’ unit picked off MVP frontrunner Kyler Murray twice and sacked the electric QB four times, including another sack for Defensive Player of the Year candidate Aaron Donald who now has 10 on the year.
Like the Seahawks, the Rams have had their struggles under the high ball this year too and the secondary ranks in the lower tier of the league, ceding 246.5-YPG, so there’s always a chance of a Seattle win if QB Wilson has one of those days…
However, in recent meetings against Aaron Donald, the Seahawks QB hasn’t fared so well, including in the last contest when Wilson had to exit the game early after breaking his thumb on Donald’s advancing helmet!
Plus, it’s looking like Wilson’s No.1 target on deep throws isn’t going to make it out on the turf either…
Rams vs Seahawks Team News
Seahawks will be without WR1 Tyler Lockett for the trip to LA. The wideout, who has 1,023-yards already this season, has been added to COVID-IR. RB Alex Collins, RT Brandon Shell, DE Kerry Hyder Jr., and CB D.J. Reed will also miss out.
For the Rams, RE Tyler Higbee and RT Rob Havenstein will miss out on the offense, whilst LB Von Miller and CB Jordan Fuller will be absent for the defense.
NFL Picks: Rams vs Seahawks
With the Seahawks in decent form of late and with their hopes for another crack at the playoffs now hanging in the balance, we’re expecting to see Pete Carroll’s team throw caution to the wind, unleash Russell Wilson’s arm-power, and to have him try to connect with WR D.K. Metcalf downfield as often as possible. Expect to see the Seahawks make a real game of it. The season is over if they don’t – it’s that simple.
From a betting perspective, however, it’s impossible to view this match as anything other than one of the NFL’s best QB/WR combos in Matthew Stafford & Cooper Kupp on home turf vs the NFL’s worst secondary.
As such, we’re backing the Seahawks to score and make a show of it, which is why we’re avoiding the spread this week. But, unable to defend the high ball, expect the Rams superior talent to win out over the sixty.
Prediction: Rams win and pull the plug on Seattle’s playoff aspirations.
