New Zealand 1-1 Slovakia
2010 FIFA World Cup
15 June 2010
New Zealand would get a dramatic result with a goal in stoppage time to get a much needed draw.
Slovakia had a 1-0 lead in the last minute of stoppage time before conceding the goal and seeing their knockout stage chances take a hit. A win would have put them on top of the group with matches against Italy and Paraguay remaining.
The opening goal for Slovakia came in the 50th minute as a cross was sent in the box and Robert Vittek headed it into goal. It was a very good header from Vittek and poor marking from the Kiwis defense.
The match would stay at 0-1 until the third minute of stoppage time when New Zealand’s Winston Reid leveled the match. A cross was played into the box where Reid headed it into the back of the net.
The final whistle came only seconds later and it was a 1-1 draw. Slovakia will be extremely disappointed to concede such a late goal while New Zealand will find confidence with the result.
