Mexico 0-1 Uruguay
2010 FIFA World Cup
22 June 2010
Uruguay won Group A with 1-0 win over Mexico to book their place in the knockout stage.
Mexico also qualified for the next round despite the loss because of a better goal difference than South Africa. Uruguay’s win will likely keep them from playing Argentina in the round of 16.
The match was not as defensive as the score might suggest as both teams created chances early in the first half. Uruguay would eventually be the first to strike as Luis Suarez scored in the 43rd minute to make it 1-0.
In the second half, Mexico would send players forward and look for the equalizer but couldn’t find it. Fortunately they didn’t need the win to advance but will probably face Argentina in the next round. Their main focus will be to convert chances as its been their main problem in the World Cup.
