Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio is a summer target for both Barcelona and Liverpool, TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed.

Mateo Musacchio

Musacchio, 23, is having a fine season for El Submarino Amarillo, and has alerted some of the world’s top names to his existence, with Liverpool and Barca said to be the front-runners for the his signature.

The centre-back was linked with a January move to Manchester United, but now it seems Liverpool are most keen to bring him to the Premier League.

Manager Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to build upon the success of this campaign with a productive summer transfer window, and with Daniel Agger perennially linked with a move away from the club, Musacchio could well come in to challenge Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho in the heart of the Liverpool defence next season.

Barcelona are in the hunt for a replacement for veteran defender Charles Puyol, who announced that he would be leaving the Camp Nou at the end of the season.

What do you think? Would Musacchio be a good signing for Liverpool? Let me know in the comments below…
