Italy 1-1 Paraguay
2010 FIFA World Cup
14 June 2010
Once again a goalkeeping error would determine the outcome of a match in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Paraguay would take a 1-0 lead into the second half before a poor play from goalkeeper Justo Villar allowed Italy to equalize. The opening goal which gave Paraguay the lead came in the 39th minute as Antolin Alcarez scored in the 39th minute. It was a header from a free kick.
Italy would eventually take advantage of the error from Villar in the 63rd minute as Daniele De Rossi tied the match at 1-1. The goal resulted when a corner kick was sent in, Villar came to punch it out but missed, and De Rossi capitalized by volleying it into the back of the net.
There would be no goals in the rest of the match and each team would get a point with two group stage matches remaining. It wasn’t a particularly strong performance from Italy who are still favorites to win the group but few expect them to make it very deep into the tournament. Both teams will face New Zealand and Slovakia in their final two group stage matches.
