United are in the FA Cup final, Chelsea play Blackburn today in the second semi, Arsenal are safe and could overtake Liverpool for 3rd spot, West Ham blew their survival chances and Real Madrid blew their title chances.
All that and more in today’s daily roundup:
Main Football News
- The customary Owen Hargreaves column at BBC. This week he talks about how good Manchester United. He’s going to keep doing that until they bloody well let him go there.
- With Sunderland winning another game and cementing that top spot, Roy Keane is the toast of the footballing world. Here’s an interview worth reading, courtesy of the Guardian.
- On most Sundays, David James writes for the Guardian. This Sunday he’s talking about gays in football. An intelligent article even if the comments to it are lacking.
- On-field violence in football is becoming more and more commonplace – yesterday it was Ipswich vs Derby, next week it’ll be someone else. There should be a way to stop it, no?
- Jason Burt writes in the Independent about Martin Jol’s season and the problems facing him.
- The Times has an excellent article on player wages, contract lengths and the terms under which top players can leave their clubs. And of course, something about Ronaldo’s new wages.
- Marseille are ok with selling Ribery as long as the buyers pay 20m Euros and that Marseille don’t qualify for the Champions League. If they do qualify, I imagine the transfer fee will then be at least 20m Pounds.
- Newcastle are willing to take the FA to court over their refusal to pay for Owen’s medical / rehabilitation costs. Mainly this would be to prevent Owen from playing for England in the summer.
- One of Chelsea’s key strengths is their physical fitness and ability to play 90 minutes at full tilt. Ian Hawkey from the Times has more.
- Rio Ferdinand’s injury should only keep him out for a week. He expects to be back for Boro next Saturday.
- Jose Mourinho wants the Chelsea board to speak to the press and clarify his future. Not an unfair demand, methinks.
- Real Madrid passed up a golden opportunity to put pressure on title rivals Sevilla and Barcelona by losing away to Real Zaragoza. The match full of incident and controversy, as Simon Baskett tells us.
