Manchester United are reportedly locked in a battle to sign the highly rated Monaco midfielder, Tiemoué Bakayoko. The Red Devils, however, are likely to face strong competition from Premier League rivals, Manchester City and Chelsea.
According to reports from the Mirror, José Mourinho, the United manager, has identified the 22-year-old Frenchman as his top midfield target in the January transfer window.
Bakayoko, who joined from Stade Rennais for €6m in 2014, has rapidly established himself as one of the most talented holding midfielders in Europe. Such is his demand that AS Monaco are reconsidering their position that the player won’t be sold this month.
The French club value the player at €25m. He is strong in the tackle, comfortable in possession, and an able passer of the ball. United are ready to sanction the departure of Morgan Schneiderlin, while the club will also listen to offers for Bastian Schweinsteiger. Should either of them leave the club in January, United could make a formal move for Bakayoko.
Antonio Conte is a big admirer of the midfielder. Last week, Daily Mail reported that Chelsea were preparing a bid for the Frenchman.
The Premier League leaders have money to spend following the departure of Oscar to the Chinese Super League. The Blues have also shown an interest in Franck Kessié, but Bakayoko would be a cheaper option than the Atalanta midfielder.
It remains to be seen whether United or Chelsea follow up their interest with a formal bid for the midfielder. Bakayoko reportedly is looking to stay in France for now, but things can change quickly if Monaco receive a good offer from either of the Premier League clubs.
