Man Utd have stepped up their hunt for a successor to Patrice Evra, according to reports, with Porto’s Alex Sandro to be the subject of a potential bid in January.
The ‘Metro’ reports that Utd boss David Moyes watched the full-back in Porto’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, and is ready to make a move, with Everton unwilling to allow former charge and main target Leighton Baines to leave until at least the end of the season.
Evra’s current Utd deal is set to expire in the summer, and after a host of sub-par performances from the Frenchman, Moyes is eager to find an adequate replacement as soon as January.
Sandro has played in Portugal since 2011, having signed in an £8m deal from Santos. He has been capped by Brazil; and would represent a good, young option for Utd.
However, Baines must remain the prime target for my money, and any other plans should be shelved until the Everton defender is considered permanently out of reach.
Meanwhile, Rafa Benitez is rumoured to be waiting for the ‘go ahead’ from his former side Liverpool so as to swoop for Danish defender Daniel Agger.
Benitez, now Napoli manager, has identified Liverpool’s Agger as the man to replace Paolo Cannavaro at the Stadio San Paolo, with the Italian having recently fallen out of favour at the club.
According to Italian newspaper ‘Corriere Dello Sport’, Benitez is now waiting for a positive response from his former side over his interest before making an official move for Agger.
The 29-year-old has only taken part in eight of Liverpool’s 16 games played in the Premier League this season.
Competition at the club, injury/illness, and Brendan Rodgers’ experiments with a back three formation has seen the Dane struggle to nail down a starting berth at Anfield.
However, it is unlikely that Rodgers will be willing to let his vice-captain leave the club in January, and any deal may have to wait until the summer.
