Last week, Chelsea had exercised the option of recalling striker Patrick Bamford from his year-long loan spell at Burnley. Initially it was thought that he would be competing for his place at Stamford Bridge, especially given the current unstable situation surrounding Diego Costa. However, it seems that Chelsea have other plans in mind.
According to reports from the Telegraph, the Blues have agreed to a deal with Middlesbrough for an initial fee of around £6m, and it could rise to £10m if bonuses and add-ons are taken into account. The 23-year-old forward will undergo a medical today ahead of completing a permanent move to Middlesbrough.
The youngster joined Chelsea from Nottingham Forest for £1.5m in January 2012, but he is all set to leave the London giants without playing a single game for the club.
Bamford has been one of the several young players who have spent most of the time on loan outside Stamford Bridge. The Burnley move was his sixth such loan spell. Bamford has disappointed in this spell, playing a grand total of only 33 minutes across six games in the Premiership. His last appearance for the club came in the 2-1 defeat against Manchester City on January 2, when he was brought on for the final two minutes.
The 23 year old enjoyed the most productive spell of his career during the 2014-15 season with Middlesbrough in the Championship, having scored 19 goals for the Riverside club.
Sky Sports are reporting that Bamford is in advanced talks over a permanent move to Boro. Aitor Karanka, the Boro manager, is looking to reinforce his attacking options and wants Bamford to compete with Alvaro Negredo and Rudy Gestede for a place in his side.
His arrival will allow Jordan Rhodes to leave Boro, with a number of Championship clubs showing interest in him. Boro are also reportedly interested in signing Hull City winger, Robert Snodgrass.
