Reports from the Guardian claim the Gunners have triggered Leicester City star Jamie Vardy’s release clause and are ready to “prise the England international from Leicester City in a deal worth around £20m.”
This seems to be a significant shift, an anti-thesis of an Arsenal signing but it seems like Wenger, who plans for long term stability and future, is sure that the future of the team is now.
Vardy enjoyed the season of his life with Leicester recently as he helped his side to the Premier League crown and is now with England for the upcoming Euro’s. £20m is still not too much for a player who scored 24 Premier League goals last season, especially considering the outrageous sums players go for these days and a real dearth of quality strikers in the market. Olivier Giroud is not trusted by the fans and pundits alike as someone who could single handedly propel the side to the title and the demand to land a quality forward has been highlighted in recent seasons. After Arsenal’s fall from the title challenge, this problem only got more importance.
Vardy signed an improved three-and-a-half-year contract in February, with a release clause, and is seen as such a key part of their plans for the coming seasons. Leicester also offer the player participation in the Champions League. There is no reason why the Englishman has to leave but Arsenal still have more sustainability and consistency which might prove to be a decisive factor.
Silly season is truly upon us.
