Netherlands 0-1 Spain
2010 FIFA World Cup
11 July 2010
It was a match where Spain would have most of the possession and would ultimately win the match in extra time.
The Netherlands would have several good chances on the counterattack but failed to finish them. Arjen Robben had two very good chances but each time he couldn’t finish and that proved to be the defense. Despite Spain having more possession in the first 90 minutes, they didn’t have many clear chances and the Netherlands defense was able to remain disciplined.
As the match would head into extra time, the fatigue on the Netherlands started to show as they would play with 10 men for the final minutes. John Heitinga was given a red card for his second yellow in the 109th minute. Spain continued to control the match and would find the breakthrough in the 116th minute. It was a result of good passing from Spain and poor defense from the Dutch. An initial cross wasn’t cleared by the Dutch defense and Spain took advantage. Iniesta received a pass into the box and would score to make it 0-1.
The Netherlands will be disappointed as they had chances. Spain didn’t play the greatest match but proved to be the best team in the tournament.
