USA 1-2 Ghana
2010 FIFA World Cup
26 June 2010
It was a repeat of the 2006 FIFA World Cup as Ghana defeated the United States 2-1 to advance.
The two teams played in the final group stage match of the 2006 and Ghana defeated the USA 2-1 in that match. This match would end up going to extra time and saw the momentum swing between each team from half to half.
Ghana would come out strong in the match and the United States once again conceded an early goal. A turnover from Ricardo Clark in the midfield allowed Ghana to get a chance. Kevin-Prince Boateng would get some space the end of the box and beat Tim Howard goalkeeper at the near post with a low shot. It was poor defense from the Americans along with poor positioning from Howard.
The USA would fight back in the second half and force extra time. The goal came in the 62nd minute as Landon Donovan converted a penalty kick that was earned by Clint Dempsey. The USA would dominate most of the second half but couldn’t find another goal as it would go to extra time.
In the extra time, Ghana would score early as Asamoah Gyan made it 2-1 in the 93rd minute. It was once again poor defending from the USA but credit does go to Gyan for a great finish. The Americans failed to mount another comeback while Ghana will face Uruguay in the quarterfinals.
