Uruguay 2-1 South Korea
2010 FIFA World Cup
26 June 2010
Uruguay would move into the quarterfinal round with a 2-1 win over South Korea.
The South Americans had both goals scored by Luis Suarez who had a fantastic season in the Dutch Eredivisie (scoring 49 goals in 48 appearances in the 2009-10 season). The first goal came in the 8th minute as Diego Forlan sent a cross into the box that went through the box and straight to Suarez. It was poor defending and goalkeeping as the South Koreans let it go and Suarez capitalized on the chance with a goal.
South Korea would fight back in the second half and level the match as Lee Chung-Yong headed in a goal in the 68th minute. The momentum appeared to move towards the Koreans as they had most of the possession and were sending players forward. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t convert their chances and Uruguay took advantage. Suarez would score in the 80th minute as he curled a beautiful shot off the far post and into the back of the net.
It was a magnificent play from Suarez and a goal against the run of play. South Korea still kept on attacking and did get a few chances but couldn’t find the back of the net. Uruguay would hold on for the 2-1 win and will play the winner of the USA v Ghana match in the quarterfinal round.
