Netherlands 1-0 Japan
2010 FIFA World Cup
19 June 2010
The Dutch would move to six points in Group E with a solid 1-0 win over Japan on Saturday afternoon.
The match would remain scoreless until the second half as Japan did do a good job of keeping the Dutch attack in check. It wasn’t a flashy win but the Netherlands showed the ability to grind out a victory against a disciplined Japanese side.
The match winning goal came in the 53rd minute when the ball fell to Wesley Sneijder on the edge of the box and he scored on a shot. It was a powerful shot that the goalkeeper got a hand to but ultimately couldn’t keep it out of the net.
Overall, Japan’s hopes of making it to the next round are still in decent shape and they would have a good chance to make it with a result from their last match. The Dutch will clinch first place with a draw in the Cameroon/Denmark match.
