France 0-2 Mexico
2010 FIFA World Cup
17 June 2010
Mexico would get an important win to move one step closer to the knockout stage while France continued to struggle.
Overall, Mexico were the better side but the goals wouldn’t come until the second half. The first goal would come Javier Hernandez in the 64th minute as he beat the offside trap and then dribbled around the goalkeeper to score in the open net.
The second goal was a penalty as France’s Eric Abidal took down Pablo Barrera in the box. Cuauhtemoc Blanco would convert the penalty kick in the 79th minute to make it 2-0.
Both goals were scored by substitutes and proved to be great tactical moves from manager Javier Aguirre. France needs a win in their last match and for Mexico v Uruguay to not end in a draw. Mexico needs a win to clinch first in the group and a draw to guarantee a spot in the knockout stage.
