Finally the wait is over. The World Cup, football’s greatest sporting event, is about get underway in less than 24 hours from now.

England are pitted in a strong group alongside Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica. Roy Hodgson has named a strong 23-man squad, where he opted for youth over experience.

In Hodgson’s 4-2-3-1 formation, the key for England would be to strike a proper midfield balance. Skipper Steven Gerrard is certain to take the holding midfield role, but it is the other midfielder along side him that could make the difference.

Based on form, Jordan Henderson, who has had an outstanding season, should start beside his club skipper. He forged a strong on-field relationship with Gerrard for Liverpool and will be looking to replicate his holding role for his national team. He bursts forward from midfield and his bundles of energy is crucial in maintaining a proper midfield shape.

However, Hodgson can use Jack Wilshere as well, should he feels the need to give more protection to his defensive back four. He is the best man available for Hodgson, if England want to avoid being overrun in midfield.
