According to the British press, Manchester United are continuing their pursuit of Uraguyan superstar Edinson Cavani, with the Star reporting just hours ago that United officials had flown to France to discuss the possibility of a transfer with PSG.
The 27-year-old, who became the sixth most expensive player in the world last summer when he moved to Paris from Serie A side Napoli for £52.7m, has endured a stop-start debut season in Ligue 1, and has been stuck out on the wing for a large part of the campaign.
He is evidently frustrated with how things are panning out for him under Laurent Blanc, and United are said to be keen to take advantage of the precarious situation surrounding the striker.
The Guardian reported yesterday that United are, despite being technically rudderless following the dismisal of David Moyes this week, still pushing forward with their three primary transfer targets for this summer, namely Cesc Fabregas, Luke Shaw, and Cavani.
United chief executive, Ed Woodward, wants to offset the apparent instability currently residing at the club by making this summer one to remember, and bring in a superstar signing akin to the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, or indeed what he eventually meant to the club and the world of football.
The reports point to Cavani, although here at Soccerlens, we are not so sure.
While the Daily Star cannot be considered a haloed source of truth, they had also ‘revealed’ Cavani’s indignation at the possibility of a transfer to Old Trafford back in March, and that the transfer was beneath him,
“He is well aware of United’s interest in him and at one stage this might have seemed like an attractive proposal,” said a StarSport ‘source’ last month,
“But the fact is Manchester United can no longer offer him the standard of football he wants or thinks he deserves.
“The club is going through huge changes and he doesn’t feel the time is right to even consider going to Old Trafford.”
The latest Star report does acknowledge their previous story, but suggests that the sacking of Moyes is the reason behind the striker’s change of mind.
Was Moyes so malignant a presence at the club that he would dissuade players from coming to the club? And how would a manageress club without Champions League football entice Cavani, if ‘he was against the idea’ of a transfer to United only one month ago?
