Chelsea’s highly rated goal keeper Thibaut Courtois wants to prolong his loan spell at Atletico Madrid for another year.
The 20-year-old joined the Blues from Genk in 2011 but has yet to play a single game for the London based club. He immediately joined Atletico on a season-long loan and impressed everyone with his brilliant performances in the goal, managing 23 clean sheets in all competitions.
The Belgian wants to remain in Spain for another season to get regular games and further his development in the process.
Speaking to the Spanish newspaper AS, Courtois said:
“I am Chelsea player, but I am happy here. I’ll have to see what is best for them but I would be very happy if I stayed here for another year.
“I still haven’t spoken to Chelsea though. If I can’t play for them, then Atletico is the best club I can be at.
“It would be important for me and the club to make the Champions League next season. I am very happy here.”
Meanwhile, the same Spanish outlet claims that Atletico Madrid are pondering over in making an offer for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina in the summer.
The Spaniard endured a poor start to the season and struggled to get into first team action after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Now, fully fit, the 30-year-old is back to his old best and has put up some brilliant performances in recent games. Reina has been linked with a move away from Anfield. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is also keen on signing him.
The Rojiblancos expect Thibaut Courtois to return to Stamford Bridge next season while the club have earmarked Osasuna stopper Andres Fernandez as their prime target.
However, La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are equally keen to get Fernandez’s signature as a result of which Atletico could need a back-up option with Reina their ideal choice.
