“I most want to play at Liverpool because of the culture of the club and the fans.”
That was Arda Turan in 2009. Things were different back then. Under Rafael Benitez, Liverpool were one of the major power house of Europe then and could attract big names. However, Rafa was hardly backed with finances by then parsimonious owners as a result of which, the deal never materialized.
After a glittering career with Galatasaray, where he was adored as club hero, the boy from Instanbul, joined La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid in 2011.
According to reports from Eurosport, Liverpool are considering a move for Turan, though Premier League rivals Arsenal are also interested.
Turan’s contract runs until June 2017 and Atletico are also not under any pressure to sell the player. Plus, Turan is enjoying a great time with Atleti as the Rojiblancos are enjoying a great start in the league and in Europe as well.
But, it is well known that Turan has a soft spot for Liverpool (as we can see it in that quote) and Brendan Rodgers must at least try to exploit that weakness. He is only 26 and is slowly reaching the peak of his career. He is versatile, can play in either side of the wings or centrally and possesses great technical abilities. Just the right type of player Rodgers need to sculpt the squad according to his own taste.
Though, Liverpool will have to pay over £20m for the creative midfielder, but the Reds should invest the money on him.
In other news, defender Andre Wisdom is set to join Derby County on a season-long loan. The move is good for the youngster who would get regular game time under new manager Steve McClaren.
