Sunderland on the prowl for Marcos Angeleri

Sunderland expect to complete the purchase of Estudiantes right-back Marcos Angeleri for a cool £1.5 million. The finer details of the deal are going to be fulfilled over the weekend and the Argentinian is relishing the prospect of the Premiership. This is manager Steve Bruce’s fourth signing of the summer, following the deals for Cristian Riveros, Simon Mignolet and the recent year long loan signing of Eygptian international Ahmed Al-Muhammadi.

The 27-year old Angeleri said to Argentinian media:

“I am leaving to search for new horizons and progress in England. It was Sunderland’s proposal that convinced me the most. The club interested me, along with the chance of playing in the Premier League.”

Angeleri was only just overlooked for the Argentinian World Cup squad by head coach Diego Maradona and is noted for his aggression as a defender and his solid play as a wingback. He will be a vital addition to Steve Bruce’s squad, as they attempt to push themselves into European positions in the forthcoming season. Once again, Bruce isn’t scared to spend American owner Ellis Short’s money and expect more moves, as Bruce assembles his squad for the clash with Birmingham City on the opening day of the season.

Angeleri has promised the fans of Estudiantes that he will return, quoting that:

“Estudiantes is my second home. Perhaps I will return to Estudiantes as a player, as a worker of the club, or as a visitor, but I am always going to return”.

This shouldn’t be worrying for the Mackem fans, as I expect Angeleri to stay for a while and settle himself into that right back spot.
