Sporting Gijon v Real Madrid
Santiago Bernabeu, La Liga
Saturday 24 October 2009
Kick-off: 20:00 CET
Sporting Gijon Preview
Gijon’s admirable start to the 09/10 La Liga campaign has seen them perched securely in the top half of the table going into Saturday’s game with Real Madrid.
Gijon have scored 6 in their last two games, with Miguel De Las Cuevas (formerly of Atletico Madrid) driving them onward. A decent run of form and confidence shouldn’t be mistaken for naivete though. Gijon will know that Madrid, with or without their stable of strikers, still possess the firepower to demolish clubs at will.
Real’s defensive frailties were more on display in their last three games, and Gijon will be focusing on those and working on exploiting them. In a potentially tough away game, that might be enough to topple Madrid.
Real Madrid Preview
Real Madrid face a striker / X-factor crisis, with Benzema, Higuain, Ruud and Ronaldo all out injured. Raul has manfully led the line for Madrid with Kaka ably supporting the Real Madrid captain and between the two of them they should be more than a handful for the Gijon defence.
In fact the general attitude of the Real Madrid side and their reactions to conceding a goal against Milan in midweek will concern Manuel Pellegrini more, who has publicly admitted that the team needs to be mentally stronger in order succeed in its goals for this season.
And there’s hardly any point in talking about Real’s non-existent defense, in there?
Sporting Gijon v Real Madrid Prediction
If past meetings are any indicator, this will be a painful experience for Gijon fans – last season saw Madrid beat Gijon 7-1 and Bernabeu and 4-0 in the reverse fixture.
Another 4-0 victory may be too far away given the current form of both sides, but a Madrid win is likely, clean sheet or not.
Prediction: Sporting Gijon 1-2 Real Madrid
