Real Madrid 3-1 Sporting Gijon
Spanish La Liga
20 March 2010
Real Madrid struggled in the first half but eventually came through in the second half.
The match remained scoreless into the second half when Sporting Gijon would strike first. David Barral scored in the 53rd minute to stun the home crowd.
It would not last though as Real Madrid came back with a vengeance as Rafael Van der Vaart scored in the 55th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Xabi Alonso would score the winning goal in the 57th minute and Gonzalo Higuain added the final goal in the 68th minute.
It was not a particularly impressive performance from Real Madrid who looked shaky defensively the entire match. Sporting continued to have chances but couldn’t convert them. Real Madrid now leads by three points over Barcelona who will play on Sunday evening.
