Paris Saint Germain are poised to announce the appointment of Unai Emery as their new head coach, according to Spainish sports daily Marca.
The Ligue 1 champions will reportedly pay Emery’s €2 million release clause, who will replace the departing French coach Laurent Blanc.
PSG won their second successive domestic treble by winning Ligue 1, the French Cup and the League Cup but the club’s mega-rich Qatari owners are keen to see the club make progress in the Champions League.
In a recent interview, club president Nasser al-Khelaifi raised doubts over future of Laurent Blanc by describing the season as a failure for getting knocked out in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition by Manchester City with a 3-2 aggregate score.
“Honestly, I think we failed this season despite winning domestic trophies,” Khelaifi told Le Parisien.
“We did not reach our goal so this is a bad season. I have been here for five years and it is the first time that we have this feeling of failure.”
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and newly appointed Man United boss Jose Mourinho were heavily linked to take charge of the Ligue 1 giants but it now appears that Sevilla’s 44-year-old coach is all set to be announced as Blanc’s successor.
Emery’s sensational success in Europe with the Spanish side may be the prime purpose of his appointment in the French capital. The former Valencia and Spartak Moscow boss won the Europa League for a record-breaking third-straight season following a 3-1 win over Liverpool in Basel.
The Spaniard was linked with the Real Madrid job in January after the sacking of Rafa Benitez and was a leading candidate to take charge at Everton in the Premier League but meanwhile, it is reported that Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is all but confirmed as the new manager of the Merseyside club after both the clubs agreed a £5 million compensation for the Dutchman.
