Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvy has revealed that he is hoping to improve during the season ahead.
The 26-year-old is viewed as one of the more gifted players within the Magies first-team, however he managed just two goals in the Premier League last season.
Despite the fact that he did not score many goals, he did play impressively for Rafa Benitez’s side and many fans even felt that he should have earned a place in the England World Cup squad.
His temper is another thing which Shelvy will need to control if he wants to improve as a player.
He was one of two players that received two red cards in the top-flight last season- the other was Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi. No player received more red-cards than these two.
Despite working on a limited budget, Benitez managed the Toon Army impressively last season as they finished the top-flight in 10th place.
The performances of Shelvy could be vital if the club wants to secure European football next season.
The former Liverpool man has said that he hopes to score more goals during the upcoming campaign.
He told NUFC TV: “Everyone knows that I can pass the ball, but I’ve got to do the other side of the game – you obviously get judged on goals and assists, and that’s what I’ve got to add more to my game this season.”
“I didn’t get enough goals or assists last year, so that’s what I’ll be trying to work on this year.”
So far this transfer window, Newcastle have signed centre-back Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna, Sung-young Ki from Swansea and have also secured the services of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka permanently after he impressed while on loan from Sparta Prague during the second half of last season.
