Italian media outlet TMW have cited Naples based newspaper Il Mattino that Marouane Fellaini’s recent ankle injury could fuel Lucas Leiva’s move away from Liverpool.

The report from Il Mattino claims that Manchester United are now softening their stand on Fellaini, whose future certainly seems away from Old Trafford. The Red Devils manager Louis Van Gaal wants Napoli to take the Belgian on a two year loan with the English giants having a repurchase clause to get back the player by 2016. Napoli. However Napoli sporting director Riccardo Bigon wants to take the 26 year old on a season long loan deal with United to pay 50% of his wages.

The negotiations remains complicated and with Fellaini’s medical reports due on Monday, Rafa Benitez is willing to wait till his side’s second leg UEFA Champions League playoff encounter against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, the tie which is evenly poised at 1-1.

Liverpool

Should Fellaini’s test results come out worse, Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva would be Benitez’s target, the Brazilian whose future too lies away from Anfield. The Brazilian has fallen way down the pecking order at Liverpool after the arrival of Emre Can, Brendan Rodgers’ liking for Joe Allen and Steven Gerrard’s deep lying role.

Corriere Dello Sport yesterday reported that Lucas might be in favour of a transfer switch quoting the player,“If you were to get an interesting offer for me and for the club, I would definitely consider.”
