Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has hailed Chelsea striker Diego Costa as one of the best strikers in the world. In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, he spoke in details about his former teammates, challenges ahead this season and an overview on the current Atletico squad.
Luis, after just spending one season at Chelsea, was allowed to return to his old club this summer. The Brazilian has revealed that it was hard for him to stay away from not thinking about Atletico, while he was in London. He used to watch Atletico matches on Television, and was often accompanied by former Atletico teammates Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois.
When asked to comment on whether the current squad is better than the side that won the La Liga and reached the finals of the Champions League, he said:
“It’s tough to compare. That season, we won the league and reached CL final by just focusing on each match at the time, it was something special and impossible to replicate. But we’ll see at the end of the season.”
“This season, we have a lot of firepower upfront. That year, the focus was only on Diego (Costa), who was and still is one of the best in the world.”
Atletico lost Mario Mandzukic to Juventus this summer, but Los Rojiblancos have replaced him nicely with two quality strikers in Jackson Martinez and Luciano Vietto.
“I knew Jackson from playing against him. He’s a beast. He can hold up the ball and is incredibly strong. Vietto is very young with much quality and vision of the game.”
Costa meanwhile has struggled to find his last season’s scoring form for Chelsea. The 26-year-old has scored just one goal in the opening four league matches for the Blues.
