Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina has admitted that he is uncertain over his Anfield future as he prepares for the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Spain.
The 31-year-old spent the 2013-14 season on-loan at Napoli, where he re-united with his former manager Rafael Benitez. He has been selected for Vicente del Bosque’s squad for the upcoming summer event in Brazil.
Reina will return to Anfield after Spain’s World Cup campaign. The former Valencia goalkeeper believes he could not re-join Barcelona as the Catalan club have confirmed the signing of Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
The stopper says he will hold talks with Brendan Rodgers’ side and has denied to have any contacts from Atletico Madrid.
“Right now I’m only thinking of La Roja (Spain’s national team). With regards to a new club, I will first have to speak to Liverpool. My season on loan at Napoli has been very positive and I thank the Napoli people and the club,” Reina explained.
“With Barcelona there is nothing, they have just acquired (German goalkeeper) Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, hence they have that role covered.”
“I haven’t had any contact either with Atletico Madrid, I think they will do all they can to keep (Thibaut) Courtois. I will return to be a Liverpool player but I think I’m not in the coaching plans,” he concluded.
The former Swansea boss signed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland last summer and the Belgium international has been a first choice keeper for the Reds. It is unlikely that Reina will remain at Liverpool beyond the summer transfer window.
Napoli would offer Reina an exit route as they have expressed their desire to make the player’s loan move a permanent transfer in the summer window.
“Reina is a very important player both on the field and off. At the end of the season we will talk with him and Liverpool, we are interested to hold him here,” Napoli sporting director director Riccardo Bigon said.
“He has been fine in Naples, he has a very close relationship with the coach (Rafa Benitez) and also his family has settled very well.”
