Liverpool’s pursuit of Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic looks all but over after the player stated his desire to remain at Sevilla for the foreseeable future.

The Sevilla captain, who scored the penalty that earned his side a credible draw against Atletico Madrid on the weekend, had been linked with a move to Anfield this month, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season.

Brendan Rodgers is reportedly seeking out midfield reinforcement, and the 25-year-old was said to be high on the club’s transfer agenda.

But Rakitic has now put an end to the rumours, telling reporters that he is completely settled in Spain,

“I like playing for Sevilla FC, in the present, future and always,” the midfielder said after the Atletico draw,

“I’m very happy here at this club, and my family are also happy here. I am not available right now.”

The playmaker has been in superb form this season, scoring 11 and assisting 12 in all competitions, leading Sevilla to just six points off a Champions League spot in La Liga.

But with the impressive Rakitic now seemingly off the market, Liverpool will surely put all focus on finalising a deal for Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah.
