Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been given the green signal to make a formal offer for their January target Mohamed Salah.

According to The Mirror, Rodgers held talks with the American owners John Henry and Tom Werner, who jetted in from the States for a progress update on Anfield business, and top of their agenda was to make a move for Salah.

The 21-year-old caught the attention of top scouts with his virtuoso performances against Chelsea in the Champions League, while former Egyptian player now turned pundit Mido claimed the player is on the verge of joining Liverpool.

Salah is a versatile attacking midfielder, who can operate in multiple positions and would bolster the squad to good effect; much needed for the Reds if they’re serious to secure the top positions.

The 21-year-old has scored goals from wide positions and Rodgers is keen to add goals from other positions as well, to compliment the goal scoring form of strike duo – Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Basel are demanding a fee in the region of £14m but Liverpool value the player around £8m. Rodgers hopes that an agreement can be reached as Basel will listen to the pleas of the player, who is eyeing a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool may also need two full-backs (both right and left) and a defensive midfielder, following the injury to Lucas Leiva, who could be ruled out for six-to-eight weeks.
