Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon had attracted the interest of Liverpool and Tottenham over the last few weeks, but the player has ended all speculation by agreeing to a three-year deal to stay at his club. This comes as a major boost for Fulham, currently competing in the Championship.
Tottenham were reportedly leading the race for the signing of the highly rated left-back. The 17-year-old made waves over the last few months with many comparing the teenager to a “young Gareth Bale”. The left-back scored seven goals and grabbed another three assists for Fulham last season, an impressive number for a full-back.
Most of the top Premier League clubs were tracking the youngster last season, and reports suggested Spurs were in the prime position to land him. Besides Tottenham, Liverpool were heavily linked with the “wonderkid”. The Reds need to strengthen the squad, and a major area of concern is the left-back position. Vice-captain James Milner played the majority of the season as a makeshift left-back for Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool would be disappointed with this development as they need to address the full-back position over the course of this window.
The move to extend his contract and stay at Craven Cottage is a sensible one on the player’s part. Just 17, he needs to be at a place where he gets regular game-time to improve his skill set and continue his development.
