Atletico Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo confirmed that the club are in negotiations with Chelsea for the transfer of Filipe Luis and he is confident an agreement will be reached soon.

Filipe Luis is keen to return to Spain with Atleti after a mixed season with the Blues. The Brazilian defender won the league cup and the Premier League in his first season at the Bridge, but failed to cement a regular starting berth in the first team.

In search of game time, Luis is determined to bring down the curtains on his Chelsea career and will only return to Spain if Atleti are interested.

While there are other clubs interested in the defensive full back, he is keen to be reunited with Simeone, the manager who brought the very best out of him.

Cerezo confirmed that although the transfer will hold some sentimental value, the club are keen to focus on the financial aspects of the deal as well and that financial matters will have precedence over sentiment.

“There are negotiations in place but I don’t know how fruitful they will be,” Cerezo said to the Spanish media. “Filipe Luis is a magnificent player.

“We would be delighted if he comes back and I think that in the end, we will find a solution.

“As always, the financial aspect takes precedence over the sentimental aspect but I believe a deal can be reached.”

Luis made over a 100 appearances for Atletico Madrid and helped them win the La Liga and make it to the Champions League finals.

Whether or not his wish to return to Madrid is fulfilled, remains to be seen. But if Atleti can reach a financial agreement with Chelsea it makes sense for all parties for the move to happen.

Surely Mourinho would not appreciate an unhappy player on his books.
