Sevilla v Espanyol
La Liga
Saturday 24 October 2009
Kickoff: 22:00 CET
Third meets Eight in this late Saturday night La Liga kickoff, as Big Two pretenders Sevilla host Catalunia’s real giants Espanyol. Espanyol have made a good start to the season (building on their form at the end of last season that saw them escape relegation) and will be gunning for an upset on Saturday.
To their disadvantage they are going up against a settled, balanced Sevilla side that has already beaten Real Madrid this season and have serious aspirations for upsetting the Big Two monopoly in Spain this season (until the wheels fall off, that is).
The game has the danger of being a bit one-sided if Sevilla get going on Saturday.
Sevilla Preview
Sevilla look to have the best chance this season of all the La Liga sides of breaking the Barcelona-Real Madrid monopoly. Both Madrid and Barcelona lost at home in Europe in midweek and both teams have dropped points recently in the league as well, giving the chasing pack (lead by Sevilla) hope that they can make a difference this season. Add to it the fact that Sevilla have taken 3 points off Real Madrid already…
From a netural’s perspective it’s good to see a third side challenging in La Liga, but Sevilla need to do a lot more this season to have a serious chance of upsetting the natural order, not least being the task of winning games and keeping up the pressure on the top two till El Clasico at the end of November.
Sevilla didn’t really impress in Stuttgart in midweek though, and weren’t playing as well as the stats would have you believe. However, they have 6 players on 2 goals – i.e. the goals have been shared all around with the midfielders contributing regularly to the scoresheet. It’s a positive sign for Sevilla going into the thick of the season – if any particular player goes on a dry spell there’s likely to be someone to cover for him.
Espanyol Preview
Espanyol beat Tenerife 2-1 last time out but have internal problems to deal with this season, not least of which would be the contract dispute regarding club icon and ex-captain Raul Tamudo. Raul is not part of the squad at this point, replaced by Ivan Alonso (3 goals this season) and has even been rumoured to be headed to Wigan in January.
Espanyol are a good mid-table side but they simply lack the quality to deal with the likes of Navas and co.
Sevilla v Espanyol Prediction
Espanyol had made a respectable start to the season but Sevilla have got plenty of goals in them, and there’s only one likely result.
Prediction: Sevilla 3-0 Espanyol
