Cristiano Ronaldo is hoping to end his playing career at Real Madrid after deciding to sign a new contract that will keep him in the Spanish capital until at least the summer of 2021.
The three-times Ballon d’Or winner is currently on holiday in Miami but is set to join training at Real Madrid next week in his bid to recover from the knee injury he sustained during the grand final of the European tournament in France last month.
And according to Madrid-based newspaper AS, once Ronaldo returns to Madrid, he will meet his agent Jorge Mendes and club president Florentino Perez to finalize the details for his proposed new deal at Los Blancos with an official announcement expected to made later this month.
Ronaldo remains the highest paid athlete in the world, and while majority of his earnings come from endorsements, the sensational striker receives lucrative £16.5 million per year for his services to Real Madrid.
There is unlikely to be any significant change to Ronaldo’s current wage structure at Real Madrid and should he extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, the 31-year-old will be then expected to end his career at the club since the new deal will keep him at Real Madrid until 2021.
The former Man Utd star joined Real Madrid in 2009 for a then record-breaking transfer fee of £80 million and has since won one La Liga title, two Copa Del Rey and two Champions League trophies.
The Portuguese skipper surpassed Raul’s 323 goals in October last year to become Real Madrid’s all time leading goal-scorer. While the former Spanish striker managed to reach that goal tally in 741 games, Ronaldo required just 310 games to break the prestigious record, arguably making him the club’s greatest ever striker.
Ronaldo has been relentlessly linked with a move back to Manchester United or Paris Saint-Germain but the Euro 16 winner has reiterated his desire to end his career at the Bernabeu on several occasions.
Meanwhile, AS also claim that Real Madrid have opened talks with Welsh forward Gareth Bale over his contract extension.
The former Tottenham star’s current £145,000-a-week deal expires in 2019 but Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is hopeful that a new deal can be finalized soon with the Spanish giants prepared to offer over £160,000-a-week to the 27-year-old.
