Chelsea have confirmed their defender Filipe Luis has left the club and returned to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The Brazil international joined the Premier League champions from the La Liga giants last summer. He followed Diego Costa to Stamford Bridge a year earlier. The Brazil-born Spain international had an impressive season.

However, Luis struggled to cement a place in the starting XI as Jose Mourinho prefered César Azpilicueta ahead of him in the left-back position. In all competitions, the South American made 26 appearances last season.

A statement on Chelsea’s official website read, ” Chelsea Football Club has today agreed terms with Atletico Madrid for the permanent transfer of Filipe Luis.”

“The Brazilian returns to the Spanish club after a year with the Blues in which he helped us to both Barclays Premier League and Capital One Cup successes.”

According to BBC, Chelsea are now chasing Augsburg and Ghana left-back Abdul Baba Rahman as a replacement for Luis. The African defender will not be the first choice player in that position as he will be a deputy to Azpilicueta.

The former Real Madrid manager needs to bring in a left-back in the summer transfer window as an injury to the Spain international could unsettle their defence as they look to challenge in all fronts next season.
