Chelsea have reportedly agreed a £32m deal for Diego Costa, with the Atletico Madrid striker poised to complete his long-awaited move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Sky Sports broke the news of the agreement late on Monday, with their sources claiming the striker is now Chelsea-bound. The Blues have long been linked with a move for the 25-year-old, who has scored 35 goals this season for the high flying Atlei, and it now looks a done deal, with the news of the £32m deal now filtering out across the world.
The report states that the transfer is likely to go through in early June, with Jose Mourinho desperate to secure a big-name striker signing as soon as possible.
As well as Costa being set to take part in both the crucial last game of the La Liga season and the Champions League final later this month, the timing of the move is surely due to the impending 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and with Costa firing on all cylinders, it is likely his price tag would rise if the naturalized Spaniard has a barnstorming tournament in South America.
Mourinho confirmed that Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o is to leave Stamford Bridge upon the expiration of his one-year contract this summer, but that Fernando Torres, who has been strongly linked with a move to Inter Milan, is likely to stay in West London.
Torres, who surely will be replaced by Diego Costa as Spain’s premier striker this summer in Brazil, has failed to make a genuine impression during his three year stay at Chelsea, and the news that he is set to stay at the club has not been well received by the Chelsea faithful.
Demba Ba, Chelsea’s third choice striker, is set to leave with Eto’o, with Mourinho adamant that a revamp of the attack is necessary at the club, with his three strikers managing just 19 goals between them this season.
Chelsea have certainly struggled in front of goal this term, and with both Manchester City and Liverpool breaking the 100 goal mark in the season just gone by, the Blues are clearly lacking a prolific hitman to take them to the next level.
They are hoping that Diego Costa can be that man.
