Thibaut Courtois is one of the most popular figures in Spain. Chelsea signed the Belgian goal keeper from Genk in 2011 and immediately sent him on loan to Atletico Madrid. In the past couple of seasons, he has been sensational for the Rojiblancos earning plaudits from all corners.
However he has a contract with Chelsea till 2016 and the Blues equally rate him highly. He is seen as a long term replacement of Peter Cech, but whether he will be drafted straight away into the first team next season is highly doubtful.
According to reports in Spain, La Liga giants Barcelona are monitoring his situation closely and are keen to sign him up as a potential long-term replacement of goal keeper Victor Valdes, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season.
Catalan newspaper Sport understands that the 21-year-old wants to further career in Spain and would be willing to grab the opportunity of playing for Barcelona. Further, he fears that it would be difficult for him to dislodge Cech from his position at Chelsea meaning he would be deprived of regular game time at Stamford Bridge.
Barcelona have contacted the player as also his representatives to know whether he is at all interested in making the move should an opportunity arise. Further, the Catalan club had the opportunity to speak with Atletico Madrid about Courtois’ situation when they were negotiating for David Villa, where they were told that Chelsea are not at all looking to sell their prized asset to anyone at the moment.
Meanwhile president of Barcelona Sandro Rosell in an interview with Cadena SER spoke highly about Courtois saying he “is a great goalie”.
