Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta enjoyed a terrific campaign last season. The Spaniard, who was used as a left-back mainly, after Ashley Cole got injured, became one of the key performers for the team and booked his place for the World Cup as well.
The 24-year-old is a natural right back, but with Mourinho deploying Branislav Ivanovic on that role, the Spaniard was forced to play on the left hand side, where he did superbly.
However, with Ashley Cole set to leave the club and Mourinho wants to add a new left-back, there will be a genuine competition for places. If the reports are to be believed, Chelsea could sign Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid.
When Azpilicueta was asked to comment whether the inclusion of Luis would add an increased competition for him, he said as quoted by Marca:
“When you play in a top team there’s always a lot of competition for spots. I always fought for my spot with respect to all my teammates and will continue doing so.”
Last week El Confidencial reported that Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes was due to meet Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin to conclude a €50m deal for Chelsea targets Diego Costa and Filipe Luis.
When asked about if Costa will join the Blues, Azpilicueta replied ‘it seems so’. Thus from his two comments, Chelsea fans can get a clear picture that possibly a deal for both of them is as good as done.
