Silvio Berlusconi, the longest serving Italian Prime Minister and owner of AC Milan, was punched in the face by a young man holding a small statue in his hand during a rally in Milan. The 73-year-old was left with a bloodied mouth and was swiftly taken to the San Raffaele hospital where they decided to keep him overnight for observation.
Berlusoni’s spokesman assured the media that the injuries were not serious. Berlusconi himself was keen to assure the watching public that he was fine – after being knocked down and later taken into his car by his security personnel, he emerged from the vehicle to show the crowd that he was still standing and not unconscious.
The young man was soon taken into custody.
The 42-year-old man accused of attacking Berlusconi in Milan as he signed autographs, Massimo Tartaglia, was immediately taken into custody.
