Manchester United are close to completing deal for Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the German club’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke hinted on Tuesday.
The Armenian skipper appears to be closing in to become Jose Mourinho’s second signing at Old Trafford after Dortmund reportedly agreed a £26.3 million transfer fee to sell their star playmaker.
Dortmund were reluctant to sell Mkhitaryan all summer, who scored 18 goals and provided 25 assists last season and was named the Bundesliga Players’ Player of the Season.
“Manchester United have substantially improved their offer,” said Watzke, speaking to Funke Mediengruppe.
“The situation has changed. There are always several aspects in such a decision. I have already contacted the appropriate people and we will weigh up all the pros and cons at the weekend. Then, the board will make a decision.
“And as we start training on Monday, we will do that on the weekend, definitely.”
The 2016 Bundesliga runner-ups, who signed Mkhitaryan in 2013 from Shakhtar Donetsk for £23.5m million, are thought to have rejected two bids from the Premier League giants early in this transfer window.
The 27-year-old will reportedly earn £10million-a-year at Old Trafford, after penning a four-deal and will be expected to be followed by former Paris Saint-Germain centre forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic after Swedish International agreed personal terms to join Man Utd on a free transfer this summer.
Mkhitaryan, who has one-year left on his contract with Dortmund, will become Jose Mourinho second signing after the Portuguese skipper bolstered his back-line by signing former Villarreal defender Eric Bailly for a reported fee of £30 million.
