Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier was appointed the new Ibrox club captain by Gers boss Steven Gerrard earlier this month.
Former Rangers player and club hero Barry Ferguson has said that it has been a ‘wise choice’ from Gerrard to appoint the 26-year-old as club skipper.
In football, the club captain is very important as he is a leader in the dressing room and the rest of the players follow his lead.
Tavernier joined the Gers in 2015 from Wigan Athletic and has been a figure of consistency ever since.
He has been ever present for the Rangers club and has made over 140 appearances in all competitions in three years.
Ferguson reckons that Tavernier was probably the most consistent player for Rangers last season and therefore the decision to make him the skipper was probably right.
He adds that Tavernier now understands the mentality at the club and the expectation from the fans.
“James Tavernier led Rangers out and will captain them in the new era. It’s a wise choice as he has been at the club for three years now,” wrote Ferguson for the Daily Record.
“Lee Wallace obviously has his issues with the club and Tavernier was probably the most consistent player last season so it’s a good shout. I’d probably have given the armband to Allan McGregor but that’s just me being biased!
“I’m not saying a keeper can’t be captain but if you’re outfield you’re more involved and Tavernier has been at the club long enough to realise what it’s all about and the expectations and mentality needed at the club.
“The full-back has also been through some difficult times which makes you a strong character and that’s what is needed at Rangers.”
Gerrard himself has captained Liverpool for a long time, and he understands what leadership quality is all about. He can help groom Tavernier into that role which will benefit Rangers in the long run.
