According to the British tabloid The Sun, Wigan Athletic are eager to sign midfielder Nicky Butt from Newcastle United in January and are preparing a bid for the former Manchester United player.
Nicky Butt’s contract with Newcastle expires in the summer and it is highly unlikely that he shall stay with the Magpies beyond the summer. Moreover, with the current institutional crisis that Newcastle United are steeped in, it is very much likely that the former England international would like to explore other options.
Wigan manager Steve Bruce seems to be eager to sign Butt as he wants to reinforce his squad with the best players available in the transfer market. Bruce and Butt used to play alongside each other at Manchester United.
Bruce signed Butt on loan for Birmingham City for the 2005-2006 season but things went wild at the time as Butt walked out on the team after he learned that Bruce’s son Alex had replaced him on a matchday.
Could things work better this time around?
