The countdown towards today’s Kentucky Derby – the first leg of the American Triple Crown – is hotting up by the hour. The 1m2f race is one of the highlights on the US horse racing calendar – but which horse is going to win the 2022 Kentucky Derby?

Zandon and Epicenter Head The Kentucky Derby Betting

In the build-up to the 2022 Kentucky Derby the two horses that have dominated the betting are the Steven Asmussen-trained Epicenter @ 7/2 with BetOnline and the Chad C Brown runner – Zandon @ 3/1 with BetOnline.

In recent weeks the money has come for Zandon, who was the general second or third favourite in the Kentucky Derby betting market last month. However, this classy 3 year-old colt has come in for support in the last few days and it’s easy to see why.

Zandon – was last seen winning easily at Keenland on the 9th April by 2 1/2 lengths and with that only his third career start there is every chance there’s a lot more improvement to come.

Epicenter – is still very much popular in the betting for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby race. This 3 year-old heads into the Churchill Downs event having won three of his four career starts and was super impressive when winning the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds at the end of March.

Note: Odds are subect to change

Trainers Chad C Brown and Steve Asmussen Eye First Kentucky Derby Winner

The handlers of the current first and second favourite in the Kentucky Derby market – Zandon and Epicenter – are also looking for their first successes in the big US race.

Yes, Chad C Brown, who is repsonsible for Zandon, and Steven Asmussen, who looks after Epicenter, are yet to win the Kentucky Derby, but you feel their turn isn’t going to far away and with both trainers having big chances this year they will fancy their chances of breaking their duck.

Which Horse Will Be the 2022 Kentucky Derby Winner?

Away from Zandon and Epicenter, the likes of Messier @ 8/1 with BetOnline, White Abarrio @ 10/1 with BetOnline, Mo Donegal @ 10/1 with BetOnline and Taiba @ 12/1 with BetOnline all have claims too and come into the race off the back of decent runs.

However, it’s hard to not keep coming back to the main two in the betting, with the Steve Asmussen-trained EPICENTER @ 7/2 with BetOnline the most likely Kentucky Derby winner for us.

This 3 year-old colt could not have been more impressive when taking the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds at the end of March – winning by 2 1/2 lengths going away.

That last success came over 1m 1 1/2f so the step up in distance (to 1m2f) will be okay, while his only defeat was when going down by just a head three runs ago over 1m 1/2f.

Yes, those looking to take him on might cling to the fact that all four career runs have come at Fair Grounds, so is yet to race away from the New Orleans-based track. However, his last two wins suggest he’s improving still and looked to have a lot more in the tank at the line last time.

Trainer Steve Asmussen will be hoping to win the Kentucky Derby for the first time, but Epicenter’s regular jockey – Joel Rosario – is no stranger to winning the Kentucky Derby, having ridden Orb to victory in 2013. He keeps the ride and draw 3 for this colt looks the ideal berth.
