Manchester United manager David Moyes believes that new signing Juan Mata’s arrival will galvanize the team, while the Spanish could play a pivotal role in taking them to the Champions League spot this season.

The Red Devils have had a poor start to the season. The Old Trafford giants are already out of title race, while they are six points off fourth spot and lying in seventh place at the moment.

Moyes

Moyes feels that Mata, who was unveiled yesterday, following his £37.1million move from Chelsea, would give United the necessary lift to get back into top-four contention.

“What he will do is help us improve results,” said Moyes as quoted in The Mirror. “We’ve had a problem at Old Trafford making and scoring goals. If you look back at our record this season, that’s been our biggest downfall.

“It’s not necessarily been about conceding goals or how we’ve been away from home, it’s just that when we’ve been at Old Trafford, we’ve tended to not be as clinical or make as many opportunities as we would have liked.

“I think the message this sends out, as I said in the summer, is that we’re going for all the best players in the world at Manchester United and I think Juan is one of those players.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager has expressed his disappointment of failing to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.

Rodgers

The Reds were heavily interest in Basle winger Mohamed Salah but Chelsea moved in quickly and hijacked the deal.

He said: “Of course, I wanted to strengthen the team and if we are unable to do that it would be disappointing, but there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Rodgers is however hopeful that his side should still finish above Everton in the league. The two sides will go head-to-head in a top-four shoot-out tonight and a victory for the Reds would give them a massive advantage in the race for Champions League spot.
