Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has dismissed rumours linking Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder with a move to Anfield.
Wesley Sneijder has been in the news throughout this season and sadly not for the right reasons. The Dutchman, who was a key figure in Jose Mourinho’s all-conquering Internazionale side, has been out casted from the Giuseppe Meazza this season, due to a stand-off between the Italian club and the player over his wage.
Recently Inter accepted a €7.5 million bid from Galatasaray for the Dutch maestro, but the move has been put on hold since Sneijder is still “considering his options”. Wesley Sneijder was quoted in press:
“There are still two weeks to go before the end of the transfer window, so there is time. I am relaxed, and I’m considering my options.”
The above statement was an indication that Sneijder is waiting for offers from the Premier League clubs before deciding on his future. Galatasaray are waiting for the Dutchman to make up his mind, but their president Unal Aysal has stated that it won’t be a disaster if the move fails to materialize.
Unal Aysal said:
“We’ll wait another three or four days for Sneijder.
“If the deal collapses, we have alternatives. The figures quoted in the media are wrong. Our deal with Inter is worth €7.5 million (£6.3 million).
“The player knows our proposal. Inter are now calculating things with him. Our offer for his wages is below €5.5 million.
It is also true that our coach Fatih Terim wants Sneijder – he is the first name on his list.
“I see no reason why the transfer should not go through. Even if it does collapse, it won’t be the end of the world.”
Recent reports suggested that Brendan Rodgers is keen in signing the former Real Madrid midfielder. But the former Swansea manager has now steered clear of these speculations. Liverpool manager said:
‘You could probably rattle off about 20 names and the answer would be the same. The club have been linked with a whole host of players, but I couldn’t see that [Sneijder] happening,’.
The biggest stumbling block for Liverpool in signing Sneijder is the midfielder’s wage demands. The Dutchman is said to be demanding a £240,000-a-week contract, which is far from what Liverpool’s wage structure will allow them to spend.
In order to come to Liverpool, or any other English club for that matter, Wesley Sneijder must take a pay-cut. This added with the fact that there has been growing concerns over his fitness which drove away most of the clubs who were earlier interested in him.
