Wayne Rooney has been the centre of attention during this summer’s transfer window. He has been subject to two bids from Chelsea but according to former coach Mike Phelan, the England forward is ‘staying for now’.

Phelan was assistant manger at United until Sir Alex Ferguson retired and the 50-year-old told a Sky Sports programme that he believes United will not sell Rooney now.

“Manchester United seem to be using the long game. They might as well wait now. Who will they replace Rooney with? That’s the question.” He said.

“The ones they had on the radar they don’t seem to be able to nail down yet, so I think Wayne Rooney will continue to be a Manchester United player for the not-so-foreseeable future.”

“What will happen during the season and going into the next, nobody knows’

On Ferguson telling the English media that Rooney had handed in a second transfer request in two years, Phelan said: “That was a personal issue between him, the club and the manager, and he made his point clear.”

“I think deep down Wayne is that type of player where he needs to feel comfortable. He wants to play his football on the biggest stage and I think he’s got that where he is.”

“If there’s something on the horizon, we’ll find out later. But I don’t think there’s been too many clubs who have actually said ‘we will take Wayne Rooney’.”
