Not exactly the kind of news any Manchester United fan would love to hear that too on a match day. If reports from the Guardian are to believed then, Wayne Rooney is set to miss Saturday’s huge clash against arch rivals Liverpool with a hamstring injury.
The report states that the United captain was not with the rest of the squad when they checked into the Lowry Hotel in Salford on Friday. Rooney had felt felt tightness at the back of one of his leg during United’s last training session. There are however unconfirmed reports that the 29 year old would undergo a late fitness test before the game.
Should United’s worst fears come out true, Rooney will also miss United’s Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night. As far as the Liverpool clash is concerned, new signing Anthony Martial could play a major role but it is unlikely that Louis Van Gaal will straight away throw the 19 year old in such a huge game.
Marouane Fellaini could then lead the line up front while the Daily Mail suggests that Ander Herrera could play as the number ten just behind the lone striker while Juan Mata and Memphis Depay take up their respective roles on either wings.
Michael Carrick however is available for selection. The 34 year old had earlier sustained a calf injury but resumed training and could even start. It will be also interesting to see if David De Gea straight away takes his place under the sticks after penning a new four year contract with the Red Devils.
Sergio Romero has so far played under the bar keeping three clean sheets in 4 games in the Premier League but his vulnerability in United’s 2-1 loss to Swansea before the International break has raised concerns.
