Manchester United’s unsettled striker Wayne Rooney could move abroad, if he fails to engineer a move to Chelsea soon.
The Red Devils have rejected two formal bids from Chelsea, for the England international but it is understood that Rooney will hand in a transfer request shortly to force through a move. United however, have maintained the stance both publicly and privately that the striker will not be sold in the summer, especially to any of their Premier League rivals.
Rooney’s relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson went beyond repair last season and the situation hasn’t improved even with the arrival of new manager David Moyes. Further, Rooney was left angry and confused with a strong remark from Moyes where the Scot clearly stated that the England star would play a second fiddle role to Dutchman Robin van Persie.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, Rooney is so desperate to sever ties with the Old Trafford club that he could be looking to move to an attractive club on the continent.
But does he have any other offers at the moment? The 27-year-old was chased by French nouveau riche Paris Saint-Germain early in the summer, but having seen United’s staunch stance over the striker, they shifted their attentions elsewhere and wrapped up a deal for Edinson Cavani. It is now highly unlikely that the Ligue 1 champions will go for him again.
Likewise, another cash fuelled French outfit AS Monaco were also in the chase for the former Everton star, but it is also unlikely that they will go for him especially after signing Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.
Obviously, finance is a big hindrance for many European clubs to buy him. Very few clubs have the financial muscle to afford his astronomical wages. Barcelona and Real Madrid have avalanche of forwards and have other targets at the moment while German giants Bayern Munich and Serie A champions Juventus have concluded their transfers early on.
Thus, there aren’t many options left for Rooney, if United block his move to Chelsea. He will have to take a massive pay-cut (which probably he won’t do) to move elsewhere or hope that something positive to come out from Chelsea camp soon.
Either way it is tough to find any positives for Manchester United in this ordeal, and it would be best for all parties that Manchester United reach an amicable conclusion with the player soon.
