Wayne Rooney grabbed all the media headlines and social media attention on Tuesday night, when he scored his 50th international goal to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s record and in the process become England’s all-time leading goal scorer.
The 29-year-old achieved this feat after coolly slotting home from a penalty that secured England’s 2-0 win over Switzerland in the Euro 2016 qualifier.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane scored the other goal for England. The Spurs striker was under some kind of pressure having yet to open his goal scoring account in the 2015-16 Barclays Premier League.
Rooney has backed the young striker to continue scoring for his club and country. The England skipper has hailed the striker as a ‘great finisher’ and a ‘quality player’.
“He’s a young lad – we mustn’t forget that – and he’s shown tonight yet again what a quality player and great finisher he is,” said Rooney as quoted by Goal.
“If he keeps doing the things he was doing last season and the start of this season he’ll get many goals both for club and country.”
Kane enjoyed a phenomenal campaign last summer for Spurs, and he was linked with a move to United in the summer transfer window.
Sky Sports reported back in June that Manchester United were plotting an audacious £50m bid to sign the striker.
Manchester United camp will be hoping skipper Wayne Rooney to continue his international form in the league as well. Rooney scored a hat-trick for United in the Champions League play off against Brugge, but he hasn’t scored in the Premier League this season.
